Bittmann, Veronica   (1881)

Veronika Laura Basel (known as Laura) was born on December 8, 1881, in Franklin, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin. She was the youngest daughter (out of eleven children) of Joseph Baesl and Theres Augustin. Her parents had met in the U.S., and had immigrated separately between 1850 and 1854. The parents were from both sides of the border area between Bavaria and Bohemia - within a few miles of each other originally, although it is unlikely they knew each other until they met in Wisconsin. The spelling of the Basel name varies widely - Basel, Boessel, Bazel, Bosel, Baesl. According to Bohemian records, the original name was Pössl. Laura's father died just 16 days after she was born, but her oldest brother, 16-year old Joseph, probably took on the father-figure role (he was married ten years later). Laura married Otto Christian Bittmann. Laura's brother Joseph brought her to Milwaukee to work as a chambermaid at the Pfister Hotel. She was there by at least 1900, and met Otto in that timeframe, who was working as a porter at the hotel. They married on April 23, 1902. Laura and Otto had eight children from 1903 through 1919 - three boys and five girls. In 1910, Laura and Otto lived at 709 4th Street in Milwaukee. In 1927, they lived at 84 Lloyd in Milwaukee. When Laura died on May 22, 1928, their address was 429 Kenwood Boulevard in Milwaukee. Laura and Otto are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery.
